Deptford Park Primary School
The World in Our School

Science

Subject Vision

At Deptford Park, we want every child to see themselves as a scientist, providing opportunities to ask questions, explore, investigate and discover the world around them.

Our curriculum develops children’s understanding of the role science plays in everyday life and its contribution to social and technological progress. It aims to nurture reflective and responsible learners who can apply scientific knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and have a positive impact on the world around them.

How do children learn Science at Deptford Park?

Our Science teaching follows the Kapow Primary scheme, which is based on the National Curriculum. It uses a structured approach to learning where children build knowledge and skills over time. Within each unit, children revisit prior learning and then develop and extend their understanding. This supports consolidation, deepens knowledge and builds confidence, while continuing to challenge pupils to think further.

The curriculum is built around three key strands which run throughout all year groups:

  • Scientific knowledge and understanding
  • Working scientifically
  • Science in action

These strands ensure that children develop both their understanding of scientific concepts and the skills needed to investigate and think like scientists.

New learning is often introduced at the beginning of each key stage and is then revisited and applied in later years. This allows children to build on prior knowledge and strengthen their understanding over time. As a result, some year groups may have a greater focus on new content, while others focus more on applying and deepening knowledge.

How do we know what children have learned?

  • Questioning
  • Pupil learning reviews
  • Learning walks
  • Quizzing and retrieval practice
  • Performances and presentations
  • Immediate feedback and marking
  • Progress in books matches the curriculum intent
  • Summative and formative assessment
  • Internal moderation
