Physical Education
Subject Vision
At Deptford Park, we want every child to see themselves as an active, confident participant in sport and physical activity, developing a long‑lasting desire to stay physically, mentally, emotionally and socially healthy.
We know the importance of physical exercise for both mind and body, and we aim to inspire a love of movement, sport and fitness that continues beyond primary school. High‑quality PE lessons, delivered by staff and professional coaches, ensure that pupils leave us with strong fundamental movement skills, the ability to take part in a wide range of physical activities, and an understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle through both diet and exercise.
How do children learn PE at Deptford Park?
Our PE curriculum ensures that children experience a broad and balanced range of physical activities, including striking and fielding games, invasion games, net games, athletics, dance, gymnastics and swimming. The progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary has been carefully sequenced, providing opportunities for children to develop leadership, teamwork and confidence alongside physical competence. We use the PE & School Sports Network planning to support our teaching of PE.
Through carefully planned weekly lessons, children learn the skills needed to participate in a variety of sports, understanding both the rules and the purpose behind the techniques they are taught. Learning follows a differentiated, spiral approach, where children revisit existing skills and build upon them incrementally. This allows learning to be consolidated and extended, gently challenging pupils to go further.
Throughout the curriculum, pupils are taught to evaluate their own performance and that of their peers, identifying strengths and next steps. This reflective approach helps children build resilience, take measured risks and challenge themselves to achieve their goals.
