Music
Subject Vision
At Deptford Park, we want every child to see themselves as a musician, providing opportunities to learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together.
Through music, children develop confidence, creativity, and perseverance. As their musical skills grow, so does their sense of achievement and ability to reflect on their own learning. The children have opportunities to watch and to perform live music, and through this develop confidence, cultural awareness, and a deeper appreciation of the arts.
How do children learn Music at Deptford Park?
We teach music using Charanga Music School’s scheme for the Model Music Curriculum. It follows a differentiated, spiral approach to musical learning. Within each unit of learning, children revisit existing knowledge and skills and then build upon and extend them incrementally, increasing musical confidence and being challenged to grow further as musicians.
Weekly, hour-long lessons focus on:
- Listening and Responding to Music
- Understanding and Using the Language of Music
- Developing Performance Awareness and Skills
Our children have whole class instrument lessons so that children try several instruments during their time with us (including Ocarina, Recorder, Violin, Djembe
Drum, Voice and Ukulele).
In addition to our instrumental offer, there are choirs running throughout the school, Rock Steady provide rock and pop lessons, and we work closely with Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and Grove Park Opera, who facilitate our singing lessons in Year 5. We work closely with the Musician’s Company, who help to facilitate violin lessons and enrichment activities around string instruments.
Children at Deptford Park often take part in concerts with Lewisham Music, and have performed at Blackheath Halls, the Royal Festival Hall and at Deptford Green School.
