Subject Vision
At Deptford Park, we want all children to become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of the world – in other words, to think like geographers. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to question and observe places, measure and record necessary data in a variety of ways and analyse and present their findings.
Our teaching aims to build an awareness of how Geography shapes lives at multiple scales and over time. Our curriculum encourages pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.
How do children learn Geography at Deptford Park?
We teach using the Kapow Primary Geography scheme, which is based on the National Curriculum. It uses a structured approach to learning where children build knowledge and skills over time. Within each unit, children revisit prior learning and then develop and extend their understanding. This supports consolidation, deepens knowledge and builds confidence, while continuing to challenge pupils to think further.
The curriculum is built around four key strands which run throughout all year groups:
- Locational knowledge
- Place knowledge
- Human and physical geography
- Geographical skills and fieldwork
These strands ensure that children develop both their understanding of geographical concepts and knowledge, and the skills needed to investigate and think like geographers.
New learning is often introduced at the beginning of each key stage and is then revisited and applied in later years. This allows children to build on prior knowledge and strengthen their understanding over time. As a result, some year groups may have a greater focus on new content, while others focus more on applying and deepening knowledge.
