French

Subject Vision

At Deptford Park, we believe that learning a modern foreign language should be enjoyable and accessible for every child.

Children learn the French language and explore French culture, while developing an international outlook, in a fun, engaging, and inclusive learning environment. Learning French helps children to develop their communication skills and deepen their understanding of how language works, enhancing their grammar knowledge and preparing them for the challenges of the secondary school curriculum.

French is intended as a gateway to inspire children to study foreign languages and to develop a curiosity about the cultures and traditions of other countries. Through learning French, children gain greater confidence, broaden their cultural awareness, and develop an appreciation of the diverse world around them.

How do children learn French at Deptford Park?

At Deptford Park, Modern Foreign Languages is taught through the CGP Salut! scheme, which provides a structured and progressive framework for language learning. The scheme ensures coverage of key knowledge and skills through regular practice and planned opportunities for retrieval, enabling pupils to revisit prior learning and embed new vocabulary and language structures over time. This cumulative approach supports pupils in developing confidence, resilience and increasing independence as language learners, while also providing appropriate challenge as their understanding grows.

Pupils participate in a weekly program of learning that includes a balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. Throughout Key Stage 2, children develop key language skills through lessons that focus on listening and responding, building vocabulary, understanding simple grammar and using language for real purposes. By the time they move on to secondary school, pupils leave with a positive attitude towards languages and a secure foundation on which to build further language learning.
