Art & design
Subject Vision
At Deptford Park, we ensure that Art and Design is accessible to all learners. We want every child to see themselves as an artist — confident in experimenting, exploring, and expressing their own ideas, identities and perspectives. Our curriculum celebrates the rich diversity of our school community and encourages children to communicate their experiences through creative work.
We believe that every child deserves the chance to experience the joy and wonder of the arts. Through exploring artists, stories and art forms from the British Isles and across the world, children learn how art reflects the histories, values and cultures of different communities. We aim for all pupils to develop the skills, knowledge and creativity needed to produce meaningful, personal artwork.
How do children learn Art and Design at Deptford Park?
Deptford Park follows the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which fully supports the National Curriculum and the National Society for Education in Art and Design’s progression competencies. Learning is sequenced so that skills and knowledge are revisited, practised and extended in every year group. This approach ensures that learning is cumulative, allowing children to build confidence and independence as artists.
Children also learn through:
- Sketchbook exploration, where they record ideas, practise techniques and reflect on their progress.
- Practical, hands-on lessons, encouraging experimentation and risk-taking.
- Exposure to diverse artists and art movements
- Visits to local galleries and workshops with local artists, helping children see themselves as part of a wider creative community.
We alternate teaching Art and Design and DT each half term throughout the year (see document below).
How do we know what children have learned?
Assessment in Art and Design is ongoing and reflective. Children are encouraged to discuss their work, make decisions about improvements and evaluate outcomes using subject-specific language.
Teachers assess learning through:
- Formative assessment within lessons
- Summative opportunities such as unit quizzes and knowledge catchers
- Dialogue and reflection
- Evaluation of final pieces
- Progress against the curriculum intent in sketchbooks and other artwork
